What is "holistic sports performance training"?
When most think of sports performance training, many think of it only from a physical standpoint, such as the development of speed, strength, and power. Still, there is more than physical talent in developing a high-level athlete. According to IMG Academy, a school dedicated to student-athlete development, the top 12 things that make an athlete successful are self-confidence, motivation, optimism, self-discipline, acceptance, poise under stress, focus, resiliency, competitive spirit, natural leadership, humility, and passion (Img.com. n.,d). None of the qualities mentioned were physical attributes, so if one wants to become a top-tier athlete, one's mental development should be just as much of a priority as one's physical development. This is why, On The Map Training, has developed a holistic sports performance program that focuses on five specific areas: physical training, mental conditioning, nutrition, recovery and injury prevention, and leadership and life skills. These elements encompass the total development of an athlete performance not just on the field but in everyday life.
A holistic outlook on performance training can and will directly impact the current state of youth sports as it covers all aspects of sport. The focus on winning and not development has put unwarranted pressure on the youth to win and perform at high levels, which ultimately causes most of them to burn out. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, "Injury and burnout are among the top reasons for attrition in youth sports, according to the clinical report. While more than 60 million children and adolescents participate in organized sports, 70% of youth athletes drop out of these sports by age 13. That plays a role in the 75% or more of U.S. teens who don't meet physical activity recommendations (Wycoff, 2024). That is why a holistic approach to performance training is needed now more than ever.
